Please state the monthly theme in the title of your submission, along with the title and your author name. Who we are, what we accept and how to write for us. The Kenyon Review published many of these authors early in their careers, and we continue to cultivate talent, not only with our magazine, but through our workshops, awards, and fellowships. As KR has evolved from a distinguished literary magazine into a nonprofit arts organization, we remain devoted to nurturing, publishing, and celebrating the best writing from around the world. Although we welcome the work of new writers, we believe the established writer can better instruct our reader. Please include your publishing credentials related to your topic with your submission, along with a brief bio. You don’t have to unpack your entire character’s life story in a few hundred words in order to write a great short story.
It’s one storytelling strategy of how to write a short story and wrap everything up. Write one short story, whether it’s 500 or 1,000 words, per day for an entire month. When you’re writing regularly, your brain falls into the habit of being creative and thinking in terms of short stories.

Build a productive writing habit in this course for writers of all backgrounds. Yes, you can submit a manuscript that has previously been published, whether traditionally or self-published – as long as you now hold the rights. Please let us know in your covering letter if your manuscript has previously been published when you submit to us. CRAFT holds first serial publication rights for three months after publication. Authors agree not to publish, nor authorize or permit the publication of, any part of the material for three months following CRAFT’s first publication.
You don’t want to accidentally publish the same piece in multiple places. They want you to submit your character-oriented, “serious, thoughtful, yet accessible fiction,” but there’s room for humor as well. While science fiction dominates what the magazine publishes, you’re welcome to submit borderline fantasy, slipstream and surreal fiction — steer clear of sword and sorcery, explicit sex or violence.
Feel free to make the photograph as playful or as formal as you like. But you do want to tie your story up in a way that leaves the reader feeling satisfied even if they didn’t get all the answers. It’s impossible to read your story with a critical eye when you’re the one who came up with and wrote it in the first place. No matter how experienced you are as a writer, you need feedback. It’s also great practice to help you come up with titles when you write and publish your book.
I am from South Africa and are always looking for magazines that accept international submissions regarding short stories. Are now looking where I can submit my 2000 word angel-encountering story, based on true events. We publish essays, stories, poetry, memoir, travelogue, criticism, and any hybrid forms; but all in the form of letters.
